About the Bartlesville Symphony Orchestra: Performing under the leadership of Maestro Lauren Green, the Bartlesville Symphony Orchestra is celebrating the 60th Diamond Anniversary Season. Established in 1957, the BSO provides cultural enrichment, music education, and performing arts appreciation for Bartlesville and surrounding communities. The BSO is a professional community orchestra consisting of professional, student, and volunteer musicians.
Purpose of Competition: To provide promising young musicians the opportunity for exposure within the community through performance as soloists with the Bartlesville Symphony as part of the 60th Diamond Anniversary season at the Saturday, March 24, 2018 performance.
Date and Place of Competition: January 14, 2018, 1:30pm - 4:30pm at the Oklahoma Wesleyan University Chapel 2201 Silver Lake Road Bartlesville, Ok 74006
To enter: Contestants will need to fill out the YAC2018 Application and pay the $25.00 entry fee by PayPal, cash or check, made out to the Bartlesville Symphony Orchestra. (When paying through PayPal please e-mail email@example.com and let us know that you paid online and by what name you made your payment under.)
Who May Compete: Any instrumentalist, pianist or vocalist in grades 10 through 12 who fall into the categories below: 1. A resident of the school districts in Bartlesville, Dewey, Pawhuska, Barnsdall, Nowata, Copan, South Coffeyville and Caney Valley. 2. A. private student of a Bartlesville/Dewey teacher 3. A student of a regular Bartlesville Symphony Orchestra member. Current orchestra members and their relatives are also eligible, provided they satisfy the school grade requirement. All participants must be at least 15 years old at the time of the competition.
Music to Be Performed: • Any piece/aria/movement/concerto for which orchestra accompaniment exists and is available may be used (check with Luck's music http://www.lucksmusic.com or the music director). • If announced the winner, the piece played in the competition will be played with the Symphony. However, selections are subject to the Young Artists Committee's approval. • Each entrant must supply at least one copy of their music for the judges (no photo copies). • All contestants must perform from memory. • It is the entrants' teacher's responsibility to prepare the entrant for the intricacies of working with an orchestra for a major Saturday evening concert.
Who May Win: Two winners will be selected by a panel of judges; one instrumentalist and one vocalist. Each Young Artists Competition Category will have one winner with the judges' option of having one alternate and one honorable mention. The winner in each category will perform with the orchestra and receive a monetary award of $500. The judges reserve the right to not award prizes if the level of performance does not meet the high standards needed for playing with an orchestra. Only the first-place winners will perform and receive a cash award of $500 along with 4 comp tickets to the March 24 performance Those receiving alternate and honorable mention will receive 2 complimentary tickets to the March 24 performance. The winner will be asked to make appearances at other designated times and venues such as schools for educational outreach.
The Young Artists Committee reserves the right to cancel any of the Young Artists’ performance any time in the course of the competition or performance with the symphony.
