Surprise Guest Conductor Announced

Opening the October 4, 2003 concert by the Bartlesville Symphony will be a surprise guest conductor, continuing the tradition of featuring a symphony supporter in this enviable role. Music Director Lauren Green has announced that this year’s conductor will be none other than Juanita Green, popular former music teacher and also quite coincidentally Lauren’s wife.

Each year at the Symphony Society’s Symphony Ball, the Silent Auction offers symphony patrons a chance to bid for the opportunity to conduct the symphony in concert. Past years have seen conductorial debuts from ranging from diligent, well-studied efforts to conductors wielding leaf blowers or large toothbrushes!

For many years Juanita had expressed to her conductor husband her desire to get her chance on the podium, so at the 2002 ball, Lauren and Juanita once again bid for the chance and were finally victorious. Juanita was for many years a member of the orchestra’s horn section, so she is looking forward to seeing the orchestra from the front instead of the back for a change!

Since Juanita’s years as a band and choir director (not to mention the accessibility of private coaching) have given her a slight advantage over a number of previous guest conductors, she has selected a fairly major work to conduct on the concert, William Walton’s Orb and Scepter March, written for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.

The upcoming symphony ball is scheduled for November 2003, and will once again include a chance for the next budding Maestro to bid on the opportunity to demonstrate his/her podium prowess.
