BSO Goes Big Band in Season Opener
BARTLESVILLE, OKLA-October 1, 2018- A big orchestra, a big band, big sounds, and big fun will make for an exciting season opener for the Bartlesville Symphony on Saturday, October 13 at 7:30 pm at the Bartlesville Community Center.

Featured soloist will be pianist Barron Ryan, adding his own dynamic take to the evening’s eclectic musical mix as jazz meets the symphony.

Conductor Lauren Green shares the excitement. “This will be like no other concert we’ve performed. When a Big Band joins with a symphony, the sounds are amazing!”

A full 17-piece big band, replete with saxophones and all, will join the BSO in performing a variety of jazz-infused music.
Great music by George Gershwin, including “An American in Paris” will set the stage for the concert, which will feature music both familiar and seldom-heard.

Barron Ryan will be featured in a rarely heard piano concerto written in 1972 by Russian Nikolai Kapustin. Kapustin brands himself as a classical composer who writes in a jazz idiom—virtuosic, symphonic and definitely jazzy. This brilliant concerto featuring a full jazz band will provide a stunning climax to the evening’s forays into the jazz realm.

“Sometimes jazz composers added orchestral instruments. Sometimes classical composers added jazz instruments. And sometimes the music is just its own breed—somewhere in between. And we’ll be doing it all!” Green added.

“From the 1960’s third stream of Oliver Nelson’s “The Kennedy Dream” to the 1940’s Tommy Dorsey hit “Opus One” we’ll be opening up new musical worlds to our BSO audience,” concluded the BSO’s longtime maestro.

Soloist Barron Ryan grew up in Tulsa in a house filled with the sounds of music ranging from Chopin to James Brown.  He combines his influences into a musical adventure that's vintage yet fresh, historical yet hip, classic yet cool.  In other words, a perfect fit for a concert with such musical variety.

The 2018-2019 Fast Forward Season marks BSO’s 61st year in Bartlesville.  It continues a legacy of great musical performances and promises to delight and entertain audiences of all shows.  Five great performances will showcase pops, classics, and everything in between.

The October concert is sponsored State Senator Julie Daniels, State Representative Derrel Fincher, and local music teacher and former State Representative, Travis Dunlap.

Season sponsors include: Oklahoma Arts Council, Truity Credit Union and Jim Moore State Farm Insurance. To purchase tickets for the concert, stop by the BCC box office, call 918-336-2787 or visit: www.bsook.org
